History

Maharaja Suhel Dev Autonomous State Medical College & Maharishi Balark Hospitals, Bahraich:

Foundation & identity. The government medical college at Bahraich was set up as a full-fledged tertiary institution in 2019, commonly called Government Medical College (GMC) Bahraich; it’s affiliated to Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University (ABVMU) and recognized by the National Medical Commission.

Naming. The college is named after the 11th-century regional hero Maharaja Suheldev; the attached teaching hospital is named Maharishi Balark Hospitals, reflecting Bahraich’s local tradition that sages Valmiki and Balark had links to the area.

Academic start. The college began with an MBBS intake of 100 students per year; over time, it has expanded its courses (UG and select PG seats as notified).

Campus & affiliation transition. While early overviews often referenced affiliation to KGMU, Lucknow, the college is now under ABVMU following the state’s re-alignment of medical college affiliations.

Hospital development. The associated Maharishi Balark Hospital functions as the college’s teaching hospital; government progress notes have described ongoing upgradation and construction milestones in recent years as the campus and hospital capacity were built out.

Official presence. The institution maintains an official website with sections titled “The Medical College” and “History of Medical College,” along with notices and governance information.
